A Clean Slate

Blank, Pristine and Pure

If the winds of change that are blowing across our country via the Internet today come to fruition, we have a formidable task ahead.  It seems ironic to discuss it today on the birthday of our country; yet if our country is truly united on rewriting history, we had best do it properly.

Historical Alzheimer’s is easier to say than do since in order to eradicate memory, you must so back to the very beginning.

So the question becomes, just where to start.  My inclination would be the Old Testament.  There were so many injustices, dependent of course on your heritage, that pop out on every page.  I think a large segment of the politically active voices now writing Op-ed editorials and appearing on talk shows should take on this reconstruction of the past.

Next, of course, we could move to the Roman Empire.  Wow that period of history certainly opens injustice; considering the practices that were rampant in the Coliseums, both for the humans and the animals.  This will require a lot of research and an incredible amount of time.  Maybe the most vocal members of both political parties could begin on that phase of history.

The Inquisition and also the infamous Children’s Crusade come to mind, hardly times of equity for any of the victims.   Bocould almost be eliminated from the History books with one swipe of a whitewash brush.  We should rename Rome, too.  I can’t think of anything appropriate at the moment, but I know one of the strident voices I hear on the TV could come up with a good suggestion.

There is just so much to be done, I am almost overwhelmed and realize the importance of beginning immediately.   Certainly all of the wars must be forgotten, both World Wars, of course, and before that the War of 1812 and most definitely, The French and Indian War.  There were so many conflicts that need to be eradicated, I hope the leaders of this movement can handle the responsibility.

It is almost a frightening task.

I can’t imagine how many Art and Historical Museums will need to be closed.  Most of them record moments of historical inequity to mankind.  The Smithsonian comes to mind. Purging is always easier said than done.  The infamous Book Burning in 1933 in Nazi German is an example. The oft-quoted words of Heinrich Heine might be remembered.

Then, of course, there will be the mundane task of changing street signs, road maps, bridges, etc., etc.  Investigations need to be done to determine if any of the persons honored had any subliminal prejudices or negative beliefs that were not totally politically correct regardless of their achievements.  Obviously, the entertainment industry’s history is overrun with movies to be eliminated.  “Gone With the Wind” is only the tip of the iceberg.  Most likely, all John Wayne films must go, and possibly Cecil B. DeMille’s.  The Hitchcock classic, “Birds,” is really a prime example of avian injustice.

Obviously, we must strive for utter and absolute political purity.  Almost like searching for the Holy Grail in literature, but that may have to be erased also.  It speaks of only one religion.

Ah, it is not going to be easy.  Although like everything else, there will be a bright side.  No longer will students have to worry about failing History, remembering dates or people because the slate will be utterly blank, pristine and pure.  There will be no history nor remembrance of either the good or the bad.  The disease dreaded by so many humans will have afflicted the country. A loss of memory, but this time by choice.
