A Cozy Place To Read At Birch Lane Elementary

Birch Lane third-graders, Giada Venuto, William DiDominica and William Lerch, enjoyed spending time in the independent reading room.

MASSAPEQUA, NY - From Massapequa School District: The independent reading room at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is almost like a second library, filled with books for students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Its creation was a collaborative effort between the staff and the Birch Lane PTA. Teachers can sign up to bring their classes to the bright and colorful space which has a camping theme to create a cozy atmosphere. The PTA donated books and furniture, and there are numerous seating options including beanbag chairs and large pillows, so children can find comfortable places to sit and read.

Third-grade teacher Alison Morgan likes to bring her class to the reading room on a regular basis because of the large selection of both fiction and nonfiction reading materials. She said it is the perfect place for each child to find his or her “just-right” book.

“I like this room because there are a lot of books that I can try out every time I come here,” said fifth-grader Chloe Cestra. “Reading books is one of my favorite things to do.”
