Driver Attempts To Flee Traffic Stop, Violently Resists Arrest: Cops

It happened on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa on Thursday evening, police say.

MASSAPEQUA, NY —A man, who was speeding in Massapequa on Thursday evening, was stopped by police on Sunrise Highway near Louden Avenue.

However, the driver, Dennis Zvonik, 43, of Bay Shore, refused to put the car into park, police said.

An officer stepped on the running board and reached through the window to shift gears, causing the driver to hit the gas and drove away with the officer on the side, authorities said.

The Ford Econoline van went onto a sidewalk and struck a fence on Clocks Boulevard. Zvonik attempted to flee on foot.

An officer and Zvonik were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

He placed was violently resisting arrest as he was placed into custody, police said.

Zvonik is charged with second-degree assault 2 nd Degree, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. He was expected to be arraigned on Friday.

Subsequent to the investigation it was determined that Zvonik was driving with a suspended license and also has an active bench warrant from Nassau County.
