On Saturday, August 14th 2010, the Massapequa Fire Department will be hosting the 16th Annual Emergency Services Canoe Challenge. The race consists of a two mile course to the Great South Bay, beginning and ending in John Burns Park in Massapequa. You will receive a complementary race day tee shirt and free refreshments after the race.
This year's beneficiary will be the Pendergast Fund. The Heather Pendergast Fund has been established in memory of Heather Pendergast. Its purpose is to assist the children of volunteer firefighters on Long Island who have been stricken with a life threatening illness.Heather is the daughter of Penny and Ex-Chief Thomas Pendergast of the Massapequa Fire Department. At a young age, Heather was diagnosed with Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS),a rare disease which mainly involves the pancreas, bone marrow and skeleton. She was then later diagnosed with cancer. Her courageous long battle was lost October 30,2008.
There are 6 divisions. Each division will have 1st , 2nd and 3rd place medals for Men, Women and Mixed categories:

FD Fire Department - includes Ambulance companies and Fire Police
PO Peace Officer - includes Sheriffs, Constables and Police

PF Physical Fitness - includes Martial Arts, Fitness Clubs and Gyms
SC Social Clubs - includes PTA, Katie Daly's and K of C
CO Corporate – includes all corporate sponsored competitors
SD Senior Division – Sum of the ages of the 2 competitors is 90 years or better
The first place finishers of the above divisions are eligible to compete in the Grand Champion race. With the help and support of all of you, this yearly contest has become a summer event that is circled on everyone's calendar! Bring your friends and family and enjoy a Day at the Races! Hot dogs, hamburgers and liquid refreshments will be served. Everything only costs a buck!
The entrance fee is $100 per two-person canoe if registered by July 31st 2010. After that date registration will cost $125.00 per two-person canoe.
Complementary continental breakfast for all competitors will be served at 8AM. The race starts at 9:30 and will be over at approximately 2PM. If paddling is not for you, then you can just come and cheer on the competitors while listening to the G String Band and visiting our many sponsors booths on the fund raising grounds. Do all this while enjoying the view in the great outdoors!
