We live far from each other, my son and I, yet the miracle of the internet keeps us in close contact

The distance could be insurmountable, but that never has happened. Another of God’s blessings for which I give thanks

Our weekly FaceTime call is, of course, a check on each other’s wellbeing. However, often it takes an interesting excursion into the yesterdays of both our lives including the family that once was, but no longer is intact.

The time we spend together via the miracle of the internet ranges from many topics. In the words of the famed author, Lewis Carroll, “We speak of many things, ships and shoes and sealing wax.“

Recently, our conversation wandered into an unusual topic, youthful heartbreak, (neither his nor mine but another's decades ago) that we both remembered from a different viewpoint,

My belief is that adolescent trauma is part of life’s passage, and I suggested in retrospect that it becomes a moment of growth.

My son suggested I was minimizing the pain that left a scar. And as we spoke, enjoying each other’s opinions I recalled my own teenage anguish.

The year I was 15, my parents didn’t own a television set or rely on Dr, Phil’s wisdom. They believed their oldest daughter had been taught how to behave and expected I would remember both the spoken and unspoken commandments,

It was also a time in history when young women were ushered quickly from the status of student to that of wage earner, Despite my age, I was about to be a senior in high school and begin earning a living

That was also the year I believed my heart was broken and yes, Jim was right. There was pain but it faded rapidly allowing incredible joy awaiting on the horizon.

Along with so many other unexpected blessings, are the weekly FaceTime visits that include provocative and thought provoking conversations.
