I remembered Ann’s words today when I mailed the note to Tony.
The discussion arose at one of the annual reunions our husbands enjoyed so much, The two old friends (our spouses) were off reminiscing while she and I lingered over a second cup of coffee and indulged in quiet conversation.
We had been friends for a good part of our youth during the decades our beloved partners (in love and life) were members of a once elite government bureau. The two men served together for most of their adult lives. Although that autumn morning none of us were yet quite “of a certain age,” we accepted the reality that we were all teetering on that precarious edge of time,

This was the first reunion our friends, Walter and Teresa, also an integral part of our group, had missed. Walter not merely from the reunion, but now only to be remembered after a sudden and rapid illness. Earlier as we shared BLT sandwiches along with pensive thoughts, our lingering conversation had focused on Teresa, Walter’s wife and now widow. Our good friend would face growing old alone,
Tentatively, we wondered how God handled a survivor’s anguish when He claimed their beloved partner. I still remember hearing Ann’s expressed belief that our Maker was always kind to those who shared their precious lifetime together.

My coffee seemed to turn cold even as I agreed with Ann’s reflective expression of faith. We both agreed it was time to abandon the BLT’s and rejoin the men still in our world,
That provocative conversation took place a long time ago, but I still remember pretending not to be afraid of the future.
Tonight thirty years after that memorable weekend I received an email alerting me God had brought Ann home. Instantly I recalled the words she spoke so very long ago.
I know God listened to my friend’s wish and allowed her to depart first. Now she will be there to welcome Tony when he steps from the ferry.
And of course, I, too, pray to be welcomed by the one I loved.and who was brought home first..
Because like Ann, I trust God not only hears questions but answers prayers.
