Man on Bicycle Struck, Killed by Car on Sunrise Highway

The accident occurred Saturday night in Wantagh.

A Bellmore man died after he was struck by a minivan while he attempted to ride his bike across Sunrise Highway in Wantagh Sunday night, police said.

The accident occurred at 9:15 p.m. just west of Old Mill Road.

According to police, the bicyclist was attempting to cross Sunrise Highway from south to north. When he crossed the grassy median and entered the westbound lanes of the highway, he was struck by a 2000 Dodge Caravan, police said.

The bicyclist suffered multiple trauma injuries and was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police did not release the man’s name.

The 50-year-old male minivan driver was not hurt, but his 56-year-old wife, a passenger in the vehicle, suffered minor glass injuries and traumatic stress, police said. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation.

The minivan was impounded from the scene for brake and safety checks as the investigation continues. No criminal charges will be filed, police said.
