Massapequa Boys Hoops Looks to the Future
With only one returning senior, the Chiefs plan to rebuild.

Head Coach Martin Voigt is very excited about the Massapequa Boys’
Basketball team this season. Even though there is only one returning senior to
his group of 15 member brood, Voigt knows there will be a year of hard work, discipline and a strong desire to win.
“It’s going to be a learning experience this year,” Voigt says. “But we’re not going to use that as an excuse. We’re a very young team in a difficult league.”
Returning to the Chiefs this season is guard Christopher
Husmann, who is the only returning senior on the squad. Along with Husmann, junior William Schlich is the other half of the backcourt for Massapequa. Last year, he was one of the team’s offensive weapons.

Senior Forward Christian Smith is coming off a winning season with the Boys Volleyball team and hopes to continue that success with the basketball squad, while junior guard Brian Flecker and junior forward Ryan McGuire look to help round out the team.
Last year, the Chiefs (11-5) finished fourth in Conference AA-I,
but lost in the first round of the playoffs to Hempstead. “We beat them twice during the regular season, but then lost to them at Hempstead in the playoffs,” Voigt said. “It’s a real [competitive] league. Always has been.”

Even though Massapequa dropped their first game to Roslyn,
61-43 and are (1-2) after losing to Uniondale Tuesday, Voigt said he can tell this year will be full of energy, dedication and
surprises. “I have a good bunch of kids,” he said. “They are full of hard work, pride, class and the desire to win.”
“I’m very optimistic about this year. [Judging from the first game] we play very hard and have improved our skill level from last year. We are bonding together which is really good and we’re taking little steps forward.”
The Chiefs will face Port Washington on Wednesday.
