Massapequa Coast Fall to Commack South 5-1 in Long Island Championship Game

Massapequa's early struggles too much to overcome.

The incredible run of the Massapequa Coast 10-year-old Williamsport team came to an end Monday night.

The District champions  Massapequa Coast little leaguers took a long road trip to Rocky Point to take on Commack South for a chance to win the sectional championship. At stake was a spot in the New York State Championship tournament for their age group.

After winning three games in the tournament and dropping only one, Massapequa came up short in the final losing 5-1.

Starting Pitcher Chris Wasson and his defense fought hard through the inning but let up four early runs to the Commack side. But with their parents' support and the crowd on their side they held their heads high knowing  a good team can fight back.

As Commack took the field in the bottom of the first, looking very confident, Massapequa attempted to mount a comeback.

They were able to get on base and make Commack's starting pitcher sweat a little by loading the bases and driving in a run off of a walk.

Commack  got out of the inning only yielding one run and leaving the bases loaded. They scored once more in the top of the second inning.

Wasson and relief pitcher Aidan Cooney would shut down the Commack side for the rest of the game, leaving it to the bats of Massapequa to fight back like they have before, most recently against Merrick. The defense led by first basemen Matt McCarthy, outfielders Ryan Mullaly and Bobby Eichele also made key plays  to keep their team in the game.

The fifth inning was big for Massapequa Coast as they needed to hold off the Commack side if they were to make their comeback. Aidan Cooney and the defense played strong and went to the bottom of the inning to finally let their bats fly but just couldn't get a string of hits together to get their players home.

Although it was a tough loss, Massapequa never gave in and they never let the game get out of reach.

"I'm happy we didn't beat ourselves, Commack beat us," Massapequa coach Rob Wasson said.

'We made no mistakes they just outplayed us. We'll tip our hats to the better team and work on our defense and hitting for next year."
