MASSAPEQUA, NY — The women of the Massapequa Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary have finally received their "Women of Distinction" pins. The group, made up of about 25 members, was awarded with the distinction at an annual ceremony in May, but the actual pins were back-ordered, the office of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino told Patch.

On Aug. 1, the pins were physically given to about 16 members who were at the group's monthly meeting.

"Thank you for all that you do for our community," Saladino wrote in a Twitter post with an accompanying photo.

The auxiliary group is a nonprofit extension of the Massapequa Fire Department and supports the department. The group meets monthly at the fire department's building on Brooklyn Avenue.

The auxiliary also does "good works" for the community, member Patrice Davis said, including donating school supplies to local schools and raising money for The Heather Pendergast Fund, which takes care of the sick and injured kids of volunteer firefighters and emergency responders on Long Island. The group also donates money to local churches to buy food around Thanksgiving.
