Massapequa Girls Lacrosse Hold On For Win Against Port Washington
The Chiefs defeated the Vikings behind a strong first half at Burns Park.
The Massapequa girls lacrosse team pulled off an impressive victory over Port Washington on Wednesday afternoon at , away from their normal home location just down the road. The Chiefs (9-3) played strong from start to finish to top the Vikings (10-3), 16-12.
Massapequa had two players total six points in the game, including both Kelsey O’Brien and Danielle Doherty with four goals and two assists. Madalyn Pimental contributed with seven points including two goals and five assists for the Chiefs. Port Washington was led by Alexa Froccaro with a game-high six goals and Jackie Froccaro with three goals in the loss.
Massapequa jumped out to a 4-1 lead just a few minutes into the first half on a rainy afternoon on the turf field. Port Washington came back to score five of the games’ next seven goals to tie up the score at 6-6.

After goals from Doherty for Massapequa and Alexa Froccaro for Port Washington, the Chiefs closed out the half on a 4-0 run capped off by a second goal from Pimental to go into halftime ahead 11-7.
Kristen Yevoli scored in the beginning of the second half to give her team a 12-7 lead. The two teams traded goals and then with Massapequa ahead 13-10, they went on another run to stretch the lead to 16-10 behind two goals from Doherty and one from O’Brien.

Port Washington added two more goals, but Massapequa held on for the critical conference win late in the season.
Heroes: O’Brien, Doherty and the elder Pimental all deserve equal credit in leading the Chiefs to the big win and help the team remain undefeated in Conference A-I.
Turning Point: After Port Washington cut the lead to just three goals at 13-10 with 10 minutes remaining, Massapequa went on a late run to put the game out of reach for the Vikings.
Quotable: “We knew coming into the game that they had a very strong attack, so we wanted to try possess the ball as much as possible to keep the ball out of their hands,” Massapequa head coach Megan Zimmer said. “We made the adjustments at halftime when they switched their defense and I thought we were good after that point.”
Bottom Line: Massapequa had a seven-game winning streak broken with a weekend loss at Wantagh, but rebounded nicely against a Port Washington team who had won their previous six games heading into the Wednesday match up. Massapequa has a season finale awaiting against Farmingdale that will determine the regular season conference champion.
Key Stat: Massapequa did well on their game plan of possessing the ball and using each other on offense as they assisted on 11 of their 16 goals.
