Massapequa High School DECA Club Completes Community Service Project

The holiday season is a great time to give back to the community and be thankful for what you have. This is exactly what the Massapequa High School DECA Club did in a week long community service project which took place from November 16th through November 23rd. DECA, which is an organization that puts students in real life scenarios to prepare them for the real world of marketing, finance, hospitality, and management, partnered with Sole Survivors, a program started by MHS senior Jake Rosenblum about 3 years ago. The program provides new or gently used sneakers to children and teenagers in need at the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. In a week, the club was able to collect over 75 pairs of shoes through the Sole Survivors collection bin in the main lobby of Massapequa High School. The shoes were then brought to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.“I think this was a great opportunity for the club the help the community and to help out people at the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. I hope we can continue to help out the community in the future” said Mark Fedoronko, who has been in DECA for the past 4 years, and is now a Co-President.

Massapequa’s DECA chapter, which is advised by business teachers Charlie Everitt and Ed Aromando, currently has about 30 members, a majority of which participated in this project. For completing this project Massapequa High School’s DECA chapter will receive recognition on the national level at the International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in April.
