Massapequa HS Names Class Of 2022 Valedictorian And Salutatorian
Matt McAuley and Erin Goldrick were named to the top two spots in the class, and will speak at graduation next June.

MASSAPEQUA, NY — Massapequa High School seniors Matt McAuley and Erin Goldrick have found themselves in many classes together over the past four years, so it was fitting that both were in Advanced Placement Biology when they received a call to the main office on Sept. 21. Matt was invited into Principal Barbara Lowell’s office where he found out he is the valedictorian of the class of 2022. A few minutes later, Erin went in and was told she is the salutatorian.
The top ranked graduates then both had the same reaction – they called their mothers to share the good news.
“I was very excited,” said Matt, who started his education at McKenna Elementary School. “I thought of my parents first because I knew they’d be very proud.”

Added Erin, who attended Unqua Elementary School, “It’s really gratifying because I’ve worked really hard throughout high school. It’s nice to see that pay off.”
Matt’s GPA of 101.36 and Erin’s average of 100.68 earns them speaking spots at graduation in June. Until then, they will be busy with another year of challenging coursework while fitting in time to enjoy senior celebration activities. And, of course, much time will be devoted to the college selection process as both are eyeing some of the most prestigious universities in the country.

In college, Matt plans to major in computer science, because he enjoys the problem-solving aspect, and would like to pursue a career in either cyber security or software development. His school wish list includes Cornell, Georgia Tech, Harvard and MIT. Erin said she is undecided about a major and future career path, but will likely major in a science-related field. Among her top college choices are University of Richmond, Villanova and Yale.
Matt has taken 12 AP courses and numerous computer science classes, is president of the German Club and a member of the German Honor Society and Key Club, and is on the varsity wrestling and cross-country teams. Erin has challenged herself with 10 AP courses and is a member of the French Club, French Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society and varsity tennis team.
Music has been an important part of Erin’s time at Massapequa High School. She is a member of the chorus and sings with the Chordettes, a selective vocal group that requires an audition. As a sophomore, she was in the ensemble for Legally Blonde.
“That’s been an important part of my high school experience,” she said, “because that’s my creative outlet.”
Principal Barbara Lowell congratulated Matt and Erin on their accomplishments, noting that they have achieved at a high level despite all the challenges and disruptions to school during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The valedictorian and salutatorian are always role models in our building,” she said, “because of their outstanding work ethic and motivation. Despite an atypical high school experience, Matt and Erin have persevered and found success.”
