Sunrise Mall JCPenney To Close

BREAKING: It's the only Long Island JCPenney store that will close as the company prepares to shut 138 stores nationwide.

The Westfield Sunrise Mall JCPenney will be shutting down as part of the company's plan to shutter 138 of its stores nationwide over the next few months.

JCPenney released a list Friday that revealed all of the stores that are slated to close. Most of the closures will occur in June.

According to the company, a total of 5,000 positions nationwide will be impacted by the store closures.

Most affected stores will begin the liquidation process on April 17.

The Sunrise Mall location in Massapequa is the only Long Island store that will shut down. The JCPenney stores in Bay Shore, Garden City, Lake Grove and Valley Stream will remain open.

Two other New York JCPenney stores will also close — in Dunkirk and in West Nyack — the company said.

Last month the company announced that it would be closing down up to 140 stores, as well its distribution centers in Lakeland, Florida, and Buena Park, California, but did not reveal which stores until Friday.

The move is hoped to help JCPenney better compete in the changing marketplace, CEO Marvin R. Ellison said in a statement in February.

“We believe closing stores will also allow us to adjust our business to effectively compete against the growing threat of online retailers,” Ellison said.
