Massapequa Softball loses to Farmingdale, 2-1
The Dalers defeated the Chiefs Wednesday in a Conference AA-I matchup.
The defeated Massapequa on Wednesday afternoon, 2-1 behind Isabella Corrao’s two-hitter. A three-time All-Long Island selection, Corrao struck out 14 while allowing one unearned run on just two hits and two walks to lead the Dalers to their sixth win in Conference AA-I play.
After falling to Massapqeua 4-0 in their last meeting, the Dalers utilized the dominating pitching and clutch hitting by Corrao to hang on to the 2-1 victory. Massapequa pitcher Kim Giurlando struggled, allowing six Daler hits and two runs.
Farmingdale struck first in the bottom of the third, as Kat Zabielski singled in Corrao to put the Dalers up 1-0. The score would remain 1-0 until Massapequa was able to scratch a run across following a lead-off walk surrendered by Corrao. An errant throw to third base following a stolen base attempt by Massapequa tied the game up heading into the final innings.

Farmingdale would recapture the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Corrao came to the plate with runners on base. She was walked in her three previous plate appearances but with runners on, there was nowhere to put the Dalers ace. Corrao cracked a ball up the middle that scored Kristie Summus to give the Dalers the lead, 2-1.
Corrao came back out to strike out the side in the top of the seventh to secure the win for the Dalers over Massapequa.

Heroes: Corrao and Zabielski provided the pitching and offense necessary to give Farmingdale seventh victory of the season. Zabielski went 2-3 with an RBI single and Corrao’s dominating pitching and go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth would fuel Farmingdale’s win on Wednesday afternoon at home.
Turning Point: With the score tied at 1 apiece going into the bottom of the sixth, Corrao delivered the decisive blow to put Farmingdale 2-1 over Massapequa.
Bottom Line: Isabella Corrao is one of the best softball players on Long Island and on Wednesday, she showed exactly why. The senior threw a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts and provided the Dalers with the go-ahead hit to move them to 6-4 in Conference AA-I play.
Quotables: After being shut out by Massapequa last week, Assistant Coach Brandon Oppenheim noted the improvement on offense from their loss a week ago.
“We got the bats working today,” Oppenheim said. “We got the bats on the ball today which is something we didn’t do the first time we faced them.”
Head Coach Laura Malone had high praises for her pitcher, Corrao following her.
“She owns the mound,” Malone said. “She is, in our opinion, the best pitcher in the league. We have to play up for her and that’s what we’re doing.”
Oppenheim commended the defensive play of the Dalers noting, “she’s [Corrao] getting the run support and the defense behind her as well.”
Key Stat: Strikeouts. Carrao punched out 14 Massapequa hitters, including the final five outs to seal the victory for Farmingdale.
