Massapequa Students Raise Thousands For Heart Health

The students raised more than $36,000 for the American Heart Association.

Consistently one of the top fundraisers on Long Island, Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently raised $36,400 for the American Heart Association.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade participated in the Kids Heart Challenge on April 17, in which they danced along to music and did different exercises with jump ropes. Led by physical education teachers Michael Dellicurti and Melissa Osborne, children did physical activities that promoted cardiovascular health. Pledges were tallied in the weeks that followed.

The school has eclipsed the $30,000 mark on several occasions. Katie Bauer, a youth market director for the American Heart Association, returned to her former elementary school to join in the celebration of physical fitness and healthy hearts.
