Massapequa Studio Puts A New Spin On Art

Casa de Spin brings high-quality spin art to the masses.

Susan Wilkowski spent years working as an art teacher, but she had always wanted to open up her own art studio. When she got the opportunity to open a studio in Massapequa, she jumped on it. And Casa de Spin was born.

Wilkowski said she always loved spin art and thought it was uniquely beautiful. Yes, spin art. But what people make at Casa de Spin isn't like a piece of white card stock that you used to get at fairs. Wilkowski's studio is full of large, custom-built spin art machines designed to fit full-sized canvases up to 20 inches by 20 inches.

The people who come to the studio paint on canvas and use real paints and artist's materials to make their pieces. Wilkowski coaches them through techniques they can use to get specific designs and patterns into their art, instead of just splattering paint on a spinning canvas.

"The concept is spin art," Wilkowski said. "It's taking a spinning surface and applying paint to it. But we've elevated it to a fine art."

Casa de Spin is located at 81 Grand Ave. in Massapequa. To sign up for classes and activities, visit the studio's website.
