Massapequa Wrestling Shuts Down Rival Uniondale
Chiefs look primed for another Conference title with a big win over the Knights.
The Massapequa wrestling team dominated conference rival Uniondale on Friday night at Berner Middle School, winning 55-18, to set themselves up in a solid position to win yet another conference title.
The Chiefs got off to a quick start against the Knights just as they did in their last league match against Freeport. Starting the match at 119 pounds, Pat Miller pinned Devon Russel in the second period. Justin Paradiso major decisioned a tough opponent in Marvin Amazon, 12-3, at 125 pounds. Massapequa won the next three matches by way of two pins and a forfeit at 140 pounds.
Andrew Chicoine took part in one of the bout’s most exciting matches as he held on for a 5-0 decision over Jason Gordon at 145 pounds. Chris Sarro, who is one of the favorites for a Nassau County title this season, picked up a first period pin over Anforte Rodriguez to give the Chiefs seven straight wins and a 37-0 lead to start.

Uniondale made up some ground, winning four of the next five matches and outscoring the Chiefs 18-6 during the stretch. Pat Nash pinned Justin Deleon at 96 pounds and Joe Doria and Tom Donahue both picked up minor decisions for Massapequa to wrap up the big 37-point win.
Massapequa also wrestled Sewanhaka East immediately following their win over Uniondale, winning 63-12. The Chiefs took wins in 11 of the 15 weight classes, highlighted by first period pins by Matt Alleva at 125 pounds, Rudy Lanzillotta at 130 pounds and Chris Sarro at 152 pounds.

Heroes: Andrew Chicoine set the overall tone with his gritty minor decision win over Gordon. Doria also came up big with his 6-5 decision over Mike Baret by way of a third period escape for the go-ahead point.
“Once I got ahead, I just tried to keep it and hold on although I was feeling a little tired,” Chicoine said. “In the wrestling room, everybody works and pushes each other. We’ve got a few all-county kids and they push everybody with their senior leadership.”
Turning Point: Connor Wetzel pinned Nick Rampasano in the first period at 189 pounds to give Massapequa a 43-9 lead and to clinch the match with just five weight classes remaining.
Quotable: “Things are looking good and we are working hard in the room,” Massapequa assistant coach Ronnie Serrano said. “Right now, this is the time to peak and start to tighten things up. Hopefully this win is the start of a nice run.”
Bottom Line: With two more dual meets left on their schedule, a league match against Syosset and non-league against East Meadow, Massapequa is looking to go unscathed again this season. The Syosset match will ultimately decide the conference champion, but the Braves needed two late wins to notch a one-point victory over the same Uniondale team the Chiefs dominated on Friday.
Key Stat: On the day, multiple Massapequa wrestlers picked up two wins (non-forfeits) against Uniondale and Sewanhaka East, including Pat Nash, Joe Doria, Matt Alleva, Rudy Lanzillotta and Chris Sarro.
