Massapequans Recognized for 'Generous Spirit'

Locals among 10 women honored as Assemb. Tom McKevitt's "Women of Distinction."

Two locals were among 10 women to receive Assemb. Tom McKevitt's "Woman of Distinction" award during an afternoon ceremony Saturday at Farmingdale Public Library.

Deborah Canova, of North Massapequa, and Carol Muscarella, of Massapequa, were honored by McKevitt, R-East Meadow, who holds the ceremony each year to recognize women throughout his 17th district. The award winners have "demonstrated an exceptional impact on their communities and the lives of others through their commitment service."

Canova, a Teacher’s Assistant at the Town of Oyster Bay Pre-School, is currently Captain of North Massapequa Fire Department's Ladder Company No. 1.

Muscarella is currently Principal at John H. West Elementary School in Plainedge.

"The women that we honor today represent some of the most accomplished and selfless individuals in our state and our nation," McKevitt said. "Our communities are the wonderful, welcoming places they are due to the warmth and generous spirit displayed by our honorees. We are very lucky to have these women as our friends and neighbors."

McKevitt further thanked the honorees' families, who have "allowed their loved ones to spend so much time caring for others."

In addition to Jones, 2013 Women of Distinction honorees include: Canova; Louise Cassano of Levittown; Tina Diamond of Farmingdale; Jessica Koenig of Levittown; Laurie May of Westbury; Muscarella; Laurie Rozakis, Ph.D., of Farmingdale; Margaret Santer of Levittown; and Barbara Sherwin of South Farmingdale.

Women are selected based on their accomplishments in the fields of business, community and civic affairs, education, government, health care, humanitarianism and military service.
