Midnight Mass

And Love Remembered

Kathleen and Denny invited me to go to Midnight Mass with them. It is such a beautiful night, There is snow everywhere just like the song, “ White Christmas.” Denny and Kathleen look like they have tiny stars shining in their hair. I wonder if my hair looks like that.

All the ladies smelled so nice in Church, and then when Father Malone shook the incense, it filled the air and the smells all mixed, and it became a Christmas smell, a happy smell. I prayed for Willie, and I asked God to let him keep laughing. And then I prayed for Uncle Pat because he doesn’t,t know he’s Uncle Pat anymore. I wish we had been able to go to the Old Country before he had to go to the hospital

The music is so beautiful at Christmas that it makes me want to cry. But Willie always said I shouldn’t cry so much. Kathleen had a pretty gold bracelet on her ankle. When I asked her about it, she turned pink and whispered Petey Doyle had sent it to her for Christmas. Mrs Doyle came over to us outside of Church and said, “”Kathleen, when are you moving?” Kathleen smiled and said, “”Soon, Mrs Doyle, soon,” And then we walked away, and she started to giggle.

Denny says he is going to work harder in school and try to be a lawyer. Kathleen said if he keeps up the good marks, maybe he’ll get a scholarship, and can go to St. John’s.

I wonder if they know how much I will miss them, and I guess I never told them how much I love them - all of them. But if I do that now, I’ll start to cry, and Willie wouldn’t want me to do that.

Denny said he was hungry after Mass and asked if we could walk over to Child’s. I don’t think he’s really hungry, but I think none of us are ready to go home. The night is so beautiful, and we all know it is the end of something. So we walked slowly in the crowd over towards the Circle, and when we got to the corner, you could see the trees in the Park edged in white like great lace doilies pointed up to heaven, and then we heard someone laugh and say, “”Merry Christmas,” and we all looked around. We all thought we heard Willie, and maybe -who knows- we did.

The snow is painting little diamonds on Denny and Kathleen’s hair. I wonder if she knows how pretty she is. I wish they could stay with me until I grow up too. But then, I think I’ll leave too.

It’s time to go home now. It’s time to say goodnight. It’s time to say goodbye,
