Although it is still ongoing, I no longer march in the parade.
The music is different, softer, conversational rather than the booming drumbeats once I, along with many compatriots, heard.
And so is the message that I hear as I ride in one of the chariots reserved for we “of a certain age.”

The subtle sound of the drummers seem to say:
Youth is not to be squandered with responsibility.

It is a time to enjoy and linger in its warm comfort.
Do not hasten.
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.
And then I remember relinquishing youth far earlier, and without regret.
He was 25 and I was 21 when the first of the fabulous four arrived.
I have no recollection of a feeling of loss or regret about the first of many miracles in our world.
Nor did I dream of lost adventures (climbing mythical mountains or sailing foreign seas,) it was life that gave us both comfort and confidence.
I do not remember youth slowly slipping by nor did I worry about it. He and I were too busy with the roles we had chosen in life.
Today I realize our views would now be considered eccentric or antiquated as I listen to the soft undercurrent of the flutes in the Parade. The music they play is soothing almost a tranquilizer.
And yes. the Parade is ongoing and will continue, but at a different tempo and one I find just a mite confusing.
But since I no longer march in the parade, perhaps it no longer matters.
