Northwell Health Sponsors 10th Annual National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Walk

Northwell Health sponsored the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition 5K run and walk September 24 at Belmont Lake State Park.

Representatives from Southside Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Northwell Health Imaging and the Northwell Health Cancer Institute were on hand to provide information about the disease.

“This was an inspiring event to see ovarian cancer patients and survivors and their support teams as we try to raise awareness and funding to fight this disease,” said Benjamin Schwartz, MD, ob/gyn chairman at Southside Hospital, who welcomed the crowd to the event.

Ovarian cancer has become known as a silent killer because oftentimes its symptoms are not detected until it is in a later stage. Some symptoms of ovarian cancer include difficulty eating, abdominal pressure and a bloated abdomen.

There are a few options for treating ovarian cancer, including surgery and chemotherapy.

Northwell Health will open the Imbert Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art $46.5 million, 46,000-square-foot care facility at 440 East Main Street in Bay Shore, in November.
