'Pequa Lacrosse Rolls Against Port Washington

Ten goal outburst over 17 minute span paces 12-6 win.

The Massapequa Chiefs came back off their only league loss on Wednesday, turning back an early thrust from visiting Port Washington and cruising to a 12-6 win.

The victory, which preserves the Chiefs’ hold on first place in Conference one with an 8-1, 11-3 overall record, came against a Port Washington team that -- while it struggled early in the season -- had seen its season heat up since mid-April. The Vikings (2-6, 7-7 overall), who went 4-0 in early non-conference play, had decisive wins against Plainview JFK and North Shore prior to this week’s match-up.

“Massapequa is a great team,” said Vikings coach Mike Condela. “I’m proud of the way we played. Our guys never gave up, we kept on pushing.”

“We got away from the fundamentals in the second half, but I really liked the way we played in the first half,” said Massapequa head coach Tim Radomski. “Our boys played at playoff tempo.”

In fact, Port Washington was first out of the box, showing good ball control on offense and scoring on a nice feed from Nate Omeltchenko to middie Jake Froccarro at 7:58. It wasn’t until 6:48 that the Chiefs got their game going when Dylan Sheehan hit Jamie Shand in a man up situation.

From there, however, it was all ‘Pequa, with and before the first half horn could bring relief to the Pirates, the Chiefs were up 10-2.

“We got a little lost out there,” said Port Washington coach Condela. “And we had lapses in our transition defense. But our goalie kept us in it, he made the saves he needed to make. You have to like that.”

The third quarter was relatively goal free, save for a 10 yard slingshot goal for Port’s Jake Froccarro, and a Dylan Sheehan zinger on a feed from Brent Lawless.

In the fourth, Massapequa substituted freely while Syosset kept the pressure on.“We put everybody in the game,” said coach Radomski. “They deserve to play. But They kept their starters in.”

As a result, the Pirates made the margin of defeat respectable in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Chiefs 3-1 for the final 12-6 tally.

Leading the scoring charge for the Chiefs was Dylan Sheehan and Jamie Shand who had three goals apiece. Brent Lawless chipped in two. Others scoring for ’Pequa were Luke Pellizzi, Dan Muller, Brandon Gleason and Tim Maisch. Port was led by Fraccaro, with three goals, followed by a goal apiece for Nate Omeltachenko, Richard Greenberg and defender Eric Lewis.

Massapequa goalie Joe Danahar registered 7 saves in his starting role in goal. Port’s Marco Risic stopped 10.

The Chiefs wrap up their regular season schedule with a game May 17 against East Meadow.
