Retired NYPD Chief And Massapequa Park Resident Dies From 9/11-Related Illness

MASSAPEQUA PARK, NY — Massapequa Park is in mourning this week after the death of Charles Cammerdener, a retired chief of the New York City Police Department who passed on Sept. 4 due to a 9/11 related illness, the Massapequa Funeral Home announced.

Kemmerdener died at 78 years old, and is survived by his wife, Enid, his son Sean, his Daughter Cherilyn and his two grandchildren, Alexa and Amanda. Kammerdener’s grandchildren, his obituary reads, were the “light of his life.”

Visitation for Kammerdener will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, and again from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Massapequa Funeral Home South Chapel, located at 4980 Merrick Road in Massapequa Park. There will be a funeral service in his honor Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. followed by a police escort to Calverton National Cemetary.

“The Kammerdener family extends its deepest gratitude to the NYPD community for ensuring that Charlie is honored for his service and sacrifice,” Kammerdener’s obituary reads. Donations, the obituary said, can be made in his honor to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
