MASSAPEQUA, NY - Two cars were reported stolen from the parking lot of a gym in Massapequa earlier this month, Nassau Police confirmed.

The two cars were stolen on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 16 from the XSport Fitness at the Westfield Sunrise Mall located on 1 Sunrise Mall, police said.

In both instances, the victims left their car keys on the floor nearby while they played basketball.

When they were done, the keys were gone and so were the cars.

"We have had problems with fitness centers in the past, but not stolen cars," Det. Vincent Garcia told Patch. "Usually we will get break-ins because criminals know that someone who parks their car is going to be in there for a while. We’ve also had problems where items have been stolen from lockers."

Nassau Police recently sent out an advisory to residents reminding them to keep their valuables safe while at the gym.

Police recommend residents to bring as little as possible with you when you go to work out and to try to bring a small gym bag or light weight backpack to keep their items with them at all times.

If you do leave valuables in the car, lock them in the glove box or trunk.
