Many people might be hitting up the big-box stores this Black Friday, but local residents can shop locally on Small Business Saturday this weekend.

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano encourages residents to support their hometown businesses by shopping at local stores on Saturday, November 26.

“Small Business Saturday is a national initiative that marks a day to support local businesses that create jobs, boost the local economy and preserve neighborhoods around the nation," he said. "Local businesses are the heartbeat of Nassau County’s economy and make our communities stronger and better places to live, work and raise a family.

Several organizations have joined the national campaign, founded by American Express in 2010, declaring the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year as Small Business Saturday, which is a day dedicated to supporting the small businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country during one of the busiest shopping times of the year.

According to American Express, in 2014 consumers spent an estimated $14.3 billion at independent merchants on Small Business Saturday.
