A new report by the Anti-Defamation League shows that the distribution of white supremacist propaganda increased from 2017 to 2018, and Long Island was no exception. There were dozens of anti-Semitic incidents reported across the Island during that time, as well as other white supremacist activity, the organization says.

The ADL created a Hate, Extremism, Anti-Semitism, Terrorism Map, or H.E.A.T. Map, to highlight areas of increased hateful activity. New York was one of the largest areas of white supremacist activity in 2018, the ADL said, with more than 450 reported incidents.

To create the map, the ADL used data from news reports, government documents, victim reports, extremist-related sources, investigations and more. Their experts compiled the data, they said, and created the visualization.

The most common white supremacist activity on Long Island, the report shows, is anti-Semitism. There were dozens of anti-Semitic incidents reported in 2017 and 2018, including bomb threats to Jewish institutions, swastikas and anti-Semitic graffiti, and more.

In addition to anti-Semitic incidents, the ADL says there were also multiple reports of white supremacist propaganda distributed in Suffolk County. The propaganda came from groups like the Ku Klux Clan, White Lives Matter, and Identity Evropa. The ADL says that Identity Evropa, a hate group that hids its intentions by not using overtly racist imagery, was the most prolific distributor of white supremacist propaganda across the country.
