Here's New York's Largest Employer And Number Of Employees
Walmart is the nation's largest employer, and dominates many states. But in the Empire State, a different group is the largest job provider.

There's no doubt that Walmart is the country's largest employer. More than 1.5 million Americans work for the retail giant. And while there are many New Yorkers who work for Walmart, it is not the state's largest employer.
A new report by the financial news and opinion site 24/7 Wall St. calculated the largest employers in each state. Walmart reigns supreme in 21 states. But here in the Empire State, the State University of New York system employs more people than any other group. SUNY employs 90,033 New Yorkers.
For 42 percent of states, Walmart reigns supreme.

New York joins nine other states where public universities are the largest employers, including California (which employs 198,300 in its public schools) and Vermont (which employs 7,860).
In most other states, either Walmart or hospital systems are the largest employers. In huge swaths of the South and Midwest, the retail giant is the largest employer. States like Florida, Texas, Illinois and Wisconsin are all dominated by Walmart.

States with healthcare as the largest employer are spread out more across the country. From Maine to Alaska, there are 15 states where healthcare is the largest field for employment.
The only outliers are Nevada, where casino hotels employ the most people, and Washington, where manufacturing still reigns, thanks to Boeing.
