A 6-foot-long alligator was being kept as a pet at a Medford home, Suffolk County SPCA officials said Monday.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation requested the assistance of the SPCA to remove the alligator from the home after a complaint was received on Sunday reporting that an alligator was being illegally kept on the property.
The alligator's owner, who was not identified, was charged by DEC officers. The alligator was transported to a licensed wildlife sanctuary out of state.
"Alligators do not make good pets and one of this size could be deadly," Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross said. "Alligators will bite the hand that feeds them."
