Army Veteran Tried To Kill Roommate With Bolt Cutters: Police

A 29-year-old man is charged with attempted murder. The victim is in critical condition after the attack at a Long Island homeless shelter.

YAPHANK, NY – A 29-year-old Army veteran is charged with attempted murder after he tried to kill his roommate at a homeless shelter for veterans on Long Island early Monday, police said.

According to Suffolk Police, Michael Hunter had a dispute with a man at Suffolk County United Veterans located at 32 Mill Road last week.

While the man was sleeping, Hunter hit him multiple times in the head with bolt cutters at around 2:25 a.m. Monday, police said. The 58-year-old victim, who is not a veteran but was staying at the home, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where he is in critical condition, police said.

Sixth Squad detectives charged Hunter with attempted murder. He will be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct for arraignment Tuesday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Newsday reported that Hunter saw combat in Afghanistan.
