2 Firefighters Injured, 3 Dogs Die In Medford Home Fire: Cops

Suffolk's Arson Squad detectives are investigating, police said.

MEDFORD, NY — Two firefighters and a resident were injured and three dogs died in a home fire in Medford on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The fire started at a Locust Lane home at around 9:30 a.m. All the residents escaped to safety outside, police said, adding that one person may have suffered minor injuries.

The firefighters, whose department membership was not available, were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, Jamie Atkinson, deputy coordinator of Suffolk County's Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services said.

Medford Second Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Melcher told Newsday the firefighters were "okay."

He went on to tell the outlet that firefighters found the home ablaze upon arrival.

It took crews about an hour to get the blaze under control, the outlet reported.

The fire appears to be non-criminal in nature, though the Arson Squad is still investigating, a police spokesperson said.

Altogether, firefighters from Firefighters from eight different departments, including Medford, Coram, Farmingville, Hagerman in East Patchogue, Holtsville, North Patchogue, and Yaphank, according to Atkinson.
