Hazardous Weather Outlook in Effect For Long Island

BREAKING: Rounds of severe weather, with torrential rainfall and flash flooding, will be possible through the weekend.

A day after a small tornado touched down and a lightning strike caused a home to burn to the ground on Long Island, the National Weather Service is warning of the potential for several more rounds of severe weather in the coming days.

A hazardous weather outlook is in effect for the region. Any thunderstorms that develop through the weekend will be capable of producing torrential rainfall and localized flash flooding, the NWS says.

That's right: thunderstorms are in the forecast from Thursday through Sunday.

"A very humid air mass in place across the Northeast and Ohio Valley will lead to the opportunity for drenching showers and thunderstorms to develop across the region through the weekend," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski says.

In fact, thunderstorms are also in the forecast for Monday-Wednesday of next week as well.

That's bad news for anyone with plans to hit the beach, but the rain is certainly needed, especially in Suffolk County, where rainfall deficits of up to four inches during the month of July have led to "severe drought conditions" in parts of the county for the first time since 2012.

Expect hot and humid conditions through the weekend. Temperatures may hit 90 degrees on parts of the island on Saturday and Sunday.

A heat advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday in New York City, where the heat index is expected to be near 105 degrees on Saturday.
