UPDATE: Third Man Dies From Injuries in Wrong-Way Sunrise Highway Crash

BREAKING: The 25-year-old had been in critical condition since last weekend's crash.

BROOKHAVEN, NY – A 25-year-old Brentwood man has died from injuries sustained in a wrong-way crash on Sunrise Highway that also killed two other men last weekend, Suffolk Police said Saturday.

Jonathan Valladares, who had been in critical condition at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center since the crash on the morning of Nov. 27, died on Thursday, police said.

According to police, 23-year-old Kevin Melgar was driving a 2004 Infiniti eastbound in the westbound lanes of the highway near Exit 57 in Brookhaven when his car struck a westbound 2001 Chevrolet van driven by 49-year-old Ozcan Ayyidiz at about 4:05 a.m.

Melgar, of Brentwood, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ayyidiz, of Mastic Beach, was was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Valladares was a passenger in Melgar's car.

During the crash investigation, a 2014 Isuzu street sweeper drove beyond the road closure and struck two occupied police vehicles, police said. Both vehicles had emergency lights activated at the time.

A police officer in one of the vehicles, a four-year veteran of the department, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information on the wrong-way crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.

The crash occurred exactly two months after another wrong-way fatal crash on Sunrise Highway. On Sept. 27, an off-duty Suffolk Police officer driving the wrong way on the highway crashed into a van, killing 37-year-old Brian J. Fusaro, of Bay Shore. The officer, 24-year-old Robert Scheuerer, who prosecutors say was drunk at the time, faces numerous charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide and manslaughter.
