Here are the top three stories today in Merrick:

  1. Nassau County Legislature has passed a $2 million grant appropriation for its Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness (SEPTIC). The program, which will be funded by a grant from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, will allow local residents and small businesses to replace conventional or failing septic systems with environmentally friendly, state-of-the-art technology that reduces nitrogen. SEPTIC will potentially impact the tens of thousands of homes and small businesses in Nassau County that are currently served by cesspools and septic systems. (LongIsland.com)
  2. A Nassau County man was arrested for attempting to scam an elderly man out of money over "lottery winnings." Christopher Davis, 27, reportedly called a 71-year-old man in Kansas and informed him he had won the lottery and would need to send "taxes on the lottery payout" before he could collect his prize. After learning about the scam, Nassau Police coordinated with UPS to have an empty box delivered to an address just outside of Merrick, on Debevoise Ave. in Roosevelt. When Davis arrived to retrieve the package that he thought contained the money, police arrested him and charged him with grand larceny. (Merrick Patch)
  3. Merrick is in for a cool and cloudy pre-spring weekend. Expect temperatures in the 40s and 50s, with clouds and a chance of early showers on Sunday. Get the full weekend weather forecast on Patch. (Merrick Patch)
