Due to heavy rainfall, the Nassau County Department of Health has issued a swimming advisory at five South Shore beaches, effective today, June 28, 2016.

In Merrick, the advisory was issued for the Merrick Estates Civic Association.

In addition, Biltmore Beach Club in Massapequa, Island Park Beach in Island Park, Philip Healy Beach in Massapequa and Hewlett Point Beach in East Rockaway have also been issued the advisory.

The advisory, effective June 28, is issued as a precautionary measure for beaches known to be impacted by stormwater runoff caused by heavy rainfall.

Stormwater runoff can impact bathing water quality by elevating bacteria levels, which may cause exceedances of the New York State standard for bathing water quality.
