Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Reveals Regents and AP Scores

With the summer break officially finished, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District (CHSD) reconvened Wednesday for its first monthly public board meeting of the 2012-2013 school year.

“We had a very successful opening,” Superintendent Henry Kiernan said. “Of course, as usual with the rain, we had some buses running late on the first day, but we got through that well enough, and now we’re looking forward to future events, most notably Wellington C. Mepham High School’s 75th anniversary this year.”

The results of the June 2012 Regents and Advanced Placement (AP) test scores were revealed by Caryn Blum, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment.

“Our regents diploma rate continues to be a very impressive one,” she said. “98 percent of our students graduate with a Regents diploma. Just to be noted, the New York State average is at 74 percent, so we are well above average.”

Next, Blum covered the Math and English Language Arts (ELA) scores for the district’s seventh and eighth graders.

“Our seventh grade Math results were outstanding, with 87 percent of students scoring at a three and a four, and in eighth grade Math we scored at 76 percent...both above Nassau County averages,” she said. “Our seventh grade ELA exam showed a marked increase over last year — 75 percent of students scored at a three and a four, above the Nassau average. Eighth grade ELA continues to remain steady at 68 percent, which is equal to other Nassau districts.”

“The eighth grade exam is much more rigorous than the seventh grade exam,” Blum added.

The next meeting of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is scheduled for Oct. 3 at 8 p.m.
