CHSD To Host Life-Saving Naloxone Training

Anyone over 18 can attend the free seminar to learn how to save someone who's overdosing on heroin.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District -- along with area school districts, the Community Parent Center and government officials -- will host a Naloxone training for parents, families and community members on Tuesday, March 28, at 7 p.m. in the boardroom of the Brookside School, 1260 Meadowbrook Road, North Merrick.

The training will be presented by Tina Wolf, executive director and co-founder of Community Action for Social Justice.

Naloxone is a life-saving drug that can revive overdose victims. Its brand name is Narcan, which helps restore breathing to a person who is overdosing from opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription drugs such as OxyContin, oxycodone and fentanyl. It works quickly and gives emergency responders time to get the person to a hospital.

Naloxone training participants will learn how to administer the lifesaving antidote, which can reverse the fatal effects of an opioid overdose; and receive a free Naloxone kit.

New York State and Nassau County have been working to raise public awareness about this life-saving tool, offering free training and increasing the availability of Naloxone kits. Anyone over the age 18 can be trained with a simple and informative 90-minute lesson and receive a free kit.
