Feller Addresses State-Mandated Testing Concerns

During the public comments portion of the April North Merrick Board of Education meeting, several parents voiced their opposition to upcoming state-mandated assessment testing based on the newly-adopted Common Core learning standards.

The parents stated that the new requirements are neither fair nor appropriate for elementary-age children, and that the rigorous tests will cause undue stress where it is not needed.

Responding to parents who are refusing to allow their children to take part in the testing, Superintendent David Feller stated that he agreed with many of their complaints, and that he is looking into any alternatives, both legal and otherwise, that may exist for the district.

“Want to assure you that we’re not going to put our students or our teachers in a situation that’s going to be untenable or that will provide a compromising situation,” he said. “But I also want to make sure we deal with this issue in an appropriate manner.”
