Grand Avenue Unveils Renovated Library

The space puts a focus on learning, collaboration and technology, instead of just books.

From the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District: Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Grand Avenue Middle School’s newly renovated library is the place to be.

The bright, open floor plan boasts a welcoming area, conducive for both collaborative assignments and independent studies.

“It’s a place where students could have comfortable seating; a gathering space, where kids can work together while also promoting literacy,” explained Rosanne Walker, the building’s library media specialist.

Chromebook and iPad carts are available for use on a checkout system. A new Smart Board plus the open space concept fosters an ideal learning environment for humanities classes, where the two disciplines of English and social studies are intermingled.

Walker also created a Maker Space along the windowsill.

“This allows students to unwind and explore their creative side,” Walker said.

An electronic book catalog system was added near the end caps of book stacks.

“This will teach students how to utilize the library’s various resources, as well as teach them how to independently access these tools,” she explained.

Not all is shiny and new. The original oak bookshelves were refinished in a dark brown stain, preserving some of the room’s original construction.

“I was glad to see them preserved, as they are a gorgeous accent in the room,” added Walker.
