Heavy Rains Prompt Health Adivsory for Five Nassau Beaches

High levels of bacteria could make swimming unsafe until Saturday.

Heavy rains prompted the Nassau County Department of Health to issue a health advisory about swimming at five local beaches on Friday.

The Hewlett Point Beach Club in East Rockaway, Masone Beach in Island Park, the Merrick Estates Civic Association Beach in Merrick and the Biltmore Beach Club and Philip Healey Beach, both in Massapequa, all had health advisories issued because of excessive storm water runoff.

According to the Department of Health, storm water runoff can elevate levels of bacteria, which can make the water unsafe for swimming.
