Here are the top five stories today in Merrick:
- He was feeling hangry. A man entered the Massapequa Dunkin Donuts on Wednesday and, after ordering coffee, pulled a gun on an employee and demanded money. The woman taking his order gave him the cash in the register — an undisclosed amount. The man fled on foot. Police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. (Daily Voice)
- A man was arrested Tuesday for selling cocaine from a home located just around the corner from the Roosevelt High School. Police found large amounts of cocaine and considerable cash when they raided the home. Kenneth Wheeler, 55, was arrested and charged with 12 criminal charges. (Patch)
- It can be hard to explain to children about the war in Ukraine and other frightening world events. The Long Island Press has an article that explains the best way to talk to kids about this and other difficult topics. The goal is to provide parents with the tools they need to make kids feel safe and better understand the news they are hearing. (Long Island Press)
- Earlier this week police apprehended a man who tried to shoot two people. Calvin Badger, 52, got into an argument with another man in a Roosevelt home Monday night and the disagreement escalated. Badger pulled out a gun and pulled the trigger, but the gun didn’t fire. Another resident heard the disagreement and tried to intervene when Badger fired at him as well, but, once again, the gun failed to shoot. He fled the scene on foot, but police caught up with him a little later and arrested him. (Patch)
- Holding up the reputation for great food in Massapequa, Mercato Kitchen and Cocktails has been voted the best American/Continental restaurant in Long Island. Bethpage's Best of Long Island has declared that from burgers to pasta, this is the place Long Islanders go to in droves. Owner Brian Keleigh says the inspiration comes from the fact that Mercato means "market" in Italian, which translates into fresh, local ingredients on the plate. (Daily Voice)
