Merrick Girl Wins County Essay Contest

Jessica Zhang of Harold D. Fayette School in North Merrick was honored.

Six Nassau County student winners of the 2013 New York Humane Society Essay Contest, including one from Merrick, were honored in a ceremony at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola on May 8.

Linda Mangano presented the students with citations on behalf of County Executive Mangano.

This year marks the 10th year that Nassau County has co-sponsored this event with the Humane Society of New York as part of “Be Kind to Animals Week.”  The essay theme for 2013 was, “If I could wave a magic wand, what would I do to make this world better for animals?”

Winners received a tote bag and a Barnes and Noble gift certificate from the Humane Society, and a gift basket from the North Shore Animal League.

“I would like to congratulate all of our student essay winners.  Their words of protection, healing and caring for animals are truly inspiring,” said Linda Mangano.

For more than a 100 years, the Humane Society of New York has provided veterinary care, abuse prevention and adoption services, all with the belief that the equality of each animal’s life is paramount.

  • Megan Monaghan, Maria Regina School in Seaford
  • Jeremy Martinez, Our Lady of Victory School in Floral Park
