Here are the top five stories in Merrick today:

  1. An older adult died following a house fire on Wednesday, police say. The incident happened in Roosevelt at 151 West Fulton Ave. Firefighters were able to remove the 79-year-old from the building, but she succumbed to her injuries at an area hospital. (Merrick Patch)
  2. Rena Gasparis's daughter, Kyra, was killed in July 2020 in a wreck in which the driver had a suspended license. The driver was cited for a misdemeanor and served no jail time. Gasparis, a Wantagh resident, is now working with Assemblyman David McDonough to make it a felony for a driver to crash and kill a passenger. (Patch)
  3. A former Rockville Centre resident and accomplished journalist has died. The liherald.com shared an obituary for Ron Hollander on Thursday. Hollander, who wrote for the New York Post, The New York Times and Cable News Network and taught at Montclair State University, passed away at age 80 back in late February.
  4. Looking for a new Italian restaurant to try? Get an overview of Casarecce Italia in Bellmore, which opened in January. Its a second venue for the owners of Glen Cove's Meritage Wine Bar. Early reviews report a fun approach to Italian eats along with great decor. (LongIsland.com)
  5. And here's a bit more from the local food scene: Read about a Michelin Star chef's voyage to Wantagh in the liherald.com. Chef Peter Beck grew up in New Delhi, and traveled extensively prior to settling down as a chef in the U.S. where he earned the top culinary honor in 2011. Now he showcases his talents at Kama Asian Fusion.
