New York American Water Investing $2.5 Million in Merrick

New York American Water is investing $2.5 million to install new 12-inch ductile iron water mains along Merrick Road in Merrick, New York. The project includes the replacement of approximately 2,800 feet of 12-inch water mains installed in 1930, nine fire hydrants, and 20 utility-owned service lines. Installation of this new stretch of water main will help to improve water quality, service reliability and water pressures for household use and firefighting.

“Replacing aging infrastructure is an essential part of our mission. It helps ensure a sustainable system that is capable of delivering high-quality water to each customer home for decades to come,” said Moses Thompson, New York American Water’s Vice President of Operations. “This project is part of a larger $10.5 million investment we have made to replace vintage water mains throughout our service territories in 2018. We pride ourselves on our comprehensive main replacement program as the overall impact it has on our customer’s overall quality of service is significant.”

This main replacement project—spanning along Merrick Road from Central Parkway to Merrick Avenue— is expected to begin on September 10, 2018, and be completed in approximately eight weeks. Final street restoration will be completed after the services have been installed and pass all required tests from the Nassau County Department of Health.

To help alleviate construction-induced traffic along this busy stretch of roadway, New York American Water will be performing work in the evening—between the hours of 8 p.m. and 4:00 a.m., Monday through Friday. Residents should note that sections of the street where construction is taking place may be closed to traffic during these working hours. In addition, New York American Water is committed to the safety of nearby residents, as well as its employees, and advises that pedestrians and drivers take caution while in the vicinity of worksites.
