Here are the top five stories in Merrick today:
- Police are looking for a driver who struck a pedestrian in Bellmore and left her lying in the street. Police say the 20-year-old woman was crossing Sunset Highway at Bedford Avenue when she was struck around 10 p.m. Tuesday evening. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition with head trauma. Police are hoping that anyone with knowledge of the accident will come forward and help them identify the driver. (Bronx News 12)
- A Republican political rally in Bellmore Sunday morning for several candidates brought Rudy Giuliani out to speak to the crowds. A flyer for the event declared the train station parking lot in which it was held to be the loudest street corner on Long Island. After the rally, a flag caravan was expected to travel from the rally to the American First Warehouse in Ronkonkoma. (Patch)
- A Freeport centenarian celebrated her 107th birthday on Monday. Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy joined police, firefighters along with friends and family to wish her well. - In the face of rising numbers of teen suicides, a group called the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide is bringing programs to local schools to help stop teen suicide deaths. Stacy Brief, the event coordinator for the group, says she had suicidal thoughts when she was in high school and now she works to help others. During the school program, students have breakout sessions and workshops to learn about the signs of suicide and how to prevent it. (Bronx News 12)
- Starbucks workers in Massapequa say they are having their hours slashed in retaliation for trying to unionize. The Massapequa Starbucks, 4301 Merrick Road, is the second location on Long Island where employees have made the decision to pursue a union.
