Raccoon Causes a Stir in South Merrick

According to CBS News, a raccoon has been causing quite a commotion in South Merrick near Lindenmere Drive lately.

Dubbed a "drunken sailor raccoon" it has been making an appearance often, causing residents to fear for their safety, as well as the safety of children and pets.

CBS news reports,

The young raccoon emerged from under a backyard ping-pong table, wobbling toward a Nassau County police officer trying to trap him.

When residents called police, they were told removing the raccoon would be the homeowners’ problem.

In addition, the news outlet said the Health Department would not become involved with the removal of the raccoon unless there was a human scratch or bite.

The Health Department said raccoons may emerge in daylight in search of food and can act strangely in excessive heat. They said raccoon rabies was eradicated in Nassau in 2007 and there hasn’t been a single case since then.
