Here are the top three stories in and around Merrick today:
- Merrick residents who want to support the citizens of Ukraine can head over to nearby Long Beach tonight for a scheduled Rally for Peace. The gathering will be held outside Temple Emanu-El of Long Beach at 7 p.m. Community organizations worked together to plan the rally, which will allow the local community to "virtually embrace those families in a war zone or forced to flee their homes." - On Friday, Chris Ferro, a 29-year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department, was sworn in as its new chief of detectives. Ferro, 56, was most recently a two-star assistant chief and will now be overseeing about 350 investigators. He has served as acting chief of detectives since January 2022, when former Chief Keechant Sewell became the NYPD commissioner. (Free: News 12; Subscription: Newsday)

- In honor of Women's History Month, the Nassau County Police Department shared a post honoring the legacy of Kathleen Reilly, who became the Nassau County PD’s first female police officer in 1966.
