Astoria Federal Savings recently announced that 10-year-old Matthew Liotta was named the Merrick Branch winner of the seventh annual Astoria Federal Savings Teach Children to Save essay contest.
The contest, which is in recognition of Financial Literacy Month, asks children ages 5-12 to complete the statement: “If I save a lot today, in the future I could…”
Nearly 1,000 essays were received from neighborhood branches throughout Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, Brooklyn and Westchester.
Astoria Federal Savings judges selected one winner from each branch. Liotta's winning essay describes many many different ways he would use his savings. He would attend a good college, help the less fortunate and stop world hunger.
He visited the Astoria Federal Merrick branch to receive his award including a $25 American Express Gift Card, a Teach Children to Save Certificate, and an Education First medal from Assistant Branch Manager Annamaria Natale.
