3 NYC Men Arrested On Thruway With Drugs: Police

Troopers found probable cause to search the vehicle and its occupants.

NEW PALTZ, NY — Three New York City men were arrested and accused of having illegal drugs after being stopped by police on the Thruway. State police said troopers stopped the car being driving by Peter C. Aviles, 22, of New York, for a traffic violation in the Town of New Paltz a little after midnight March 7.

While talking to Aviles and his passengers, probable cause to search the vehicle was established, troopers said.

Aviles, Lenny Gomez Jr., 22, of the Bronx, and an 18-year-old, whose name was not released, were found to be in possession of about 1.1 grams of methamphetamine, police said.

Gomez was in possession of 12.8 grams of marijuana, troopers said.

The three men were taken into custody and charged with the following:

Aviles

  • Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, with intent to sell, a felony
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony
  • Vehicle and traffic violations

Gomez

  • Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, with intent to sell, a felony
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony
  • Unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation

18-year-old

  • Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, with intent to sell, a felony
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony
  • Second-degree possession of a forged instrument, a felony
  • Tampering with physical evidence, a felony
  • Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor

The men were arraigned in the Town of New Paltz Court.

Aviles and Gomez were sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail or bond.
