“Bite the Bullet,” Washington’s Headquarters’ Program on Revolutionary era medicine, is designed to acquaint audiences with the state of medical knowledge and some of the practices of medicine in the time of George Washington. Physicians were frequently confounded by the causes of illness, treated symptoms, and relied heavily on the healing powers of nature. Many remedies stocked by apothecaries were herbal in nature, and the best doctors of the time still healed with herbs. In 1775, the US had 3,500 doctors, but only 300 had medical degrees. The profession of physician / surgeon was open only to men, but the system relied heavily on women who could be and were midwives. The lecture quotes from the diary of traveling midwife, Martha Ballard, of northern Massachusetts who kept a record of her work as a healer and a midwife, which provides an unparalleled window into practical medicine in the quarter century straddling 1800.

Speaker Bio:&nbsp;Matthew Weigman has been a Hudson Valley resident going back to 1962 and has had an interest in American history since the age of 16. His 32-year-career in communications at the auction house Sotheby’s concluded with nine years as Worldwide Director of Sales Communications, based in London. As a historical interpreter at Washington’s Headquarters Newburgh for the past four years he has enjoyed illuminating visitors and audiences about significant achievements of the “indispensable man” of the American Revolution during its final 16 months, as well as lecturing about the era of the Revolution itself. To satisfy an interest in horticulture Matthew volunteers as a Master Gardener with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County, writes regularly for the Garden Club of America magazine Bulletin and lectures in historical horticulture.

The Vassar <a href="https://www.vassar.edu/drama" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Drama Department</a> hosts a staged reading and reception honoring the recipient of the <a href="https://www.vassar.edu/drama/courses-requirements/playwriting-competition" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Marilyn Swartz Seven ’69 Annual Playwriting Competition</a>.
The award is presented to a junior or senior in any discipline who submits the best full-length play. Established in 1999, this year marks the 26th anniversary of the competition. Past recipients have come from a range of majors, including English, Math, Science, and Drama. The winning playwright receives a $1,000 award, a certificate, a staged reading, and a catered reception hosted by the Drama Department.
Recipient, play title, and additional details will be announced by the Drama Department on March 1, 2026.

KINGSTON, N.Y. –&nbsp;The&nbsp;Hudson River Maritime Museum has announced Walkie Talkie with Us, a new and&nbsp;novel series of educational historic strolls and more vigorous walks in the Kingston Rondout area.&nbsp;Led by an HRMM Educator and avid walker, each 1 -3 mile walk will explore a different neighborhood or street in the Kingston waterfront area (Rondout), uncovering stories behind historic homes and buildings, local landmarks, and the people who shaped Rondout’s past.
Walkie Talkie with Us&nbsp;is different from other walking tours that provide a walk/stop/talk format which are generally anaerobic. Walkie Talkie with Us tours maintain a gentle yet continuous pace which are more aerobic, with the Educator turning, walking and talking, to share stories and local historical musings with the group. Two routes will be offered on a rotating monthly basis, including a less strenuous “stroll” and a more rigorous “hike,” which will include the steep incline of Wurts Street.&nbsp;Routes will be chosen for walkability and seating opportunities, ensuring comfort and inclusion for all participants.

The Arts Society of Kingston (ASK) is pleased to present three new exhibitions opening May 2 and on view through May 31. The exhibitions feature Hazmat, a solo presentation by artist, Stephen Olivier, alongside the Retrospective exhibition by artist Fran Sutherland, and the members exhibition Petals &amp; Pollinators: Illustrating between the bees.

HAZMAT by Stephen Olivier
Olivier’s current body of work includes paintings and sculptural work, that emerge from the collision of biography and belief - a reckoning with the self, built from Catholic guilt, queer identity, and a lifelong quest to resolve the unfinished career of his father.
About the artist
Stephen Olivier&nbsp;is an award winning artist whose work has been exhibited widely in galleries, museums, and artist-run spaces across the United States and internationally.&nbsp;Olivier was awarded a 2025 residency at NES in Skagaströnd, Iceland.&nbsp;His work has appeared in numerous group exhibitions, including Let the Fur and Feathers Fly at Epperson Gallery in California, the Texas National Competition at the Cole Art Center in Texas, Big Bold Pride at the Art Society of Kingston, and Truth Unveiled at Art League Rhode Island.&nbsp;Additional exhibitions include the Woodstock Artists Association &amp; Museum, Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, KIPNZ in Walton, NY, and venues throughout New York, Atlanta, Miami, and Berlin.&nbsp;Olivier’s solo exhibitions include Over the Garden Wall at Subdivision Art in Long Island City, and Beforemath at the Octopus Building in Miami.
Olivier's sculptural work has also appeared in film, including creating thirty resin sculptures for Shelton Walsmith’s short film&nbsp;The Importance of Being Amber. Earlier in his career, he served as Chief Preparator at White Box and The Annex in New York, where he installed exhibitions for artists including Carolee Schneemann, Brian Maguire, Javier Téllez, Marianne Vitale, Joel Sternfeld, William Anastasi, Conrad Atkinson, and Jeff Chiplis.

FRAN SUTHERLAND
From the oil paintings created in 1958 at SUNY New Paltz until the mixed media art works of 2025, this retrospective features the landscape and bridges of the Hudson Valley inspired by abstract representations of native American (Lenape) sacred stories.
Fran Sutherland, a native New Yorker, is a painter, teacher and restorer of historic homes. Strongly influenced by Eastern aesthetics, Fran's creative paintings synthesize both Eastern and Western formats in multi-media works. The chosen media and techniques express personal ideas, which is especially evident in her textural compositions emphasizing oil and acrylic resist techniques.

Petals &amp; Pollinators: Illustrating between the Bees 
This exhibition features work that examines the beauty, fragility, and interdependence of ecological systems from the intimate exchange of pollen to the broader environmental narratives of climate change, habitat loss, and biodiversity. Through all visual mediums, artists are interpret “between the bees” expansively: as a literal space of ecological exchange, a metaphor for collaboration and community, or a meditation on the delicate balance that sustains life.

Blending meticulously restored historic imagery, engaging storytelling, and multimedia presentations, the series offers a fresh and entertaining perspective on regional and cultural history. Designed for both longtime residents and curious newcomers, each event delivers an immersive experience—far from a traditional classroom lecture—complete with compelling visuals, little-known anecdotes, and opportunities for audience interaction. Join historian Stephen Blauweiss in person for a multimedia presentation and virtual walk through the old neighborhood of Rondout before 600 structures were torn down. There will be many “Then &amp; Now" comparisons featuring a vast array of quality, historic images that Blauweiss has impeccably restored, including many of Kingston Point Amusement Park in its heyday.The presentation will be chock full of lesser-known anecdotes that will delight and inform. Stephen Blauweiss is an historian with over 30 years experience as an independent filmmaker and&nbsp;produces work on a wide variety of subjects, from art and education to social and environmental issues. He has produced over 75 short films, including three features. Twenty of his short films about artists have aired on American Public Television and have been screened in museums and festivals across the U.S., Europe and Canada, including the New York State Museum, Mass Moca, the Albany Institute of History &amp; Art, and the Dorsky Museum of Art.
